Melbourne Cup fun

Blue skies, sunshine, the PM visiting and backing the winner. I couldn’t ask for a more enjoyable day. We decided to support the Fraser Coast Cultural Festival fund raising by attending their Cup Function at the Boat Club. The crowd was there to have fun and we all enjoyed the fashion parades and the good food.
The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd called in and joined us to watch the race that stops the nation. He backed Shocking as did I. I’m not sure how much Kevin had on Shocking but I was quite happy with the return on my once a year bet.
I trust that the PM is gaining a very good understanding of our health needs as this was the primary purpose of his visit. I really hope that his government makes some tough decisions to ensure a more efficient future health service is available to all of us.

You state “I trust the PM is gaining a very good understanding of our health needs”.
If after close on two years he hasn’t got an “understanding of our health needs”, he never will have. This is not an issue that can be fixed on a one by one add hoc basis. This has got to be fixed nationally.
Based on the local’s report, he made not one firm commitment!! But no, I’m not surprised, this was just another “feeding the chooks” vists.

Sue, I’m glad Belinda got her time with Kevin to raise her profile a little for her run at Hinkler and that you got to rub shoulders and share the winning horse with the man because that was the only good thing to come out of Kev’s visit to the region.
Kevin can go back to Canberra feeling all warm and fuzzy but at the end of the day it doesn’t give us any resolution towards improving health services or any additional beds!
Ben thanks for your comment but rubbing shoulders with people in power and speaking to them is how we influence them. I constantly hear people criticising Council for not showing leadership etc. If my elected member colleagues get time to spend with the PM and Ministers from all levels of Government and manage to influence their thinking and focus on our region is that a bad thing? Politicians influence how this great country of ours is run. Most decisions are made by politicians and politicians are not that different from you and me. They speak to people, read articles and information and make decisions based on their life experiences and information they are given.
If our Deputy Mayor, in her capacity as Acting Mayor, is given the opportunity to spend time with the PM and speak about issues impacting on our area is that not a good thing? The PM was only at the Cup Function for the time it took to say hello to a swarm of people, sit down and watch the race and then leave. He was polite, courteous and friendly and took time to listen to people. It is now up to him and his Federal Government to make the tough decisions necessary to attempt a fix of our health services. Like you I am watching and waiting.
