I am advised that yes 2 x 25m pools are cheaper to build and then to operate and offer flexibility. I still personally believe that a 50m is traditionally what we all grew up with (well a lot of us did..) and that for serious swimmers the longer length has definite advantages. I await the Swimming Club report with great interest.

Hi Sue,
Are 2 X 25m pools cheaper than one 50m pool?

To workingdog70 and those that agree with the sentiments expressed. I am not arguing for the removal of the 50m pool. Based on information that I was presented with myself and the majority of Councillors we agreed that 2X25m pools was an option worth exploring. This is the proposal being discussed. It is not decided on and I am sure that as suggestions and options are explored this option may well change. Residents and pool users have already provided information that is new to me and I am still very, very keen to find a way to retain the 50m pool. But at the end of the day we do have to decide on an affordable solution. That is not my choice it is my reality.
The comparisons with Hervey Bay are inaccurate. The water park was built using State Government funds and paid for in terms of budgetted funds prior to amalgamation by WBWC. The Hervey Bay City Council contributed a toilet and car park and the land. The costs were budgetted for prior to amalgamation (before we ever knew we would be amalgamated if I recall) and have been funded therefore by Bay residents.
The Marybourough City Council has known that their pool was in disrepair for years and years yet has carried no monies forward into amalgamtion , nor done any major work to the pool and associated buildings etc, prior to amalgamation. All the 4 Councils have projects that they wanted to do but couldn't fund so this is simply a reality and casting blame on any past Council will not fix the problems we now face.
There is no tearing down of Maryboroughs resources to fund Hervey Bay anything. This statement is not based on facts. In the last 2 years Maryborough has received a CBD upgrade, new Gatakers Artspace, new footpaths, new Bruce Highway pedestrian crossing about to be built... the list goes on and is extensive.
Hervey Bay has approx twice the rate payers than Maryborough has so I would expect that more rate revenue will be expended in this area. Is this not fair and to be expected in our expansive community?
I would welcome any investigation into where our rates are actually spent as I believe it would demonstrate a true and honest attempt to spend rates based on need and needs based priorities.

Sue,

Like you I am willing to learn. Competition - there are many short course events held all over the world.

What is the difference between swimming 10x50m laps or 20x25m laps? In fact having to do more turns could be beneficial.

If the pool's shell was the only problem a liner could be the answer, but I am lead to believe the pipe work is rotten as well. This if true would rule out a liner.

People have to realize the FCRC's budget now has to lok after 4 communities, there are many things Tiaro and Woocoo need. Based on the state of it's infrastructure Maryborough will eat most of council's budget for many years to come.

If council is prepared as suggested to put in $5million what is wrong with Maryborough, if they insist on a 50m pool contributing via a Swimming Pool levy. Some what like the NSW's roads levy e.g. 10x10.

Councilor, Your arguements for getting rid of the 50m pool hinge on money. Interesting that the council could find money for a water park next to the ocean however they cannot find money for a pool 30 minutes drive from the ocean. I suppose our kids wanting to train for competition could use the muddy mary. When is the tearing down of Maryborough's resources to fund Hervey Bays upgrade going to stop. The Fraser Coast council should be ashamed of their one eyedness.
Interestingly Hervey Bay has two water slides, a water park, a huge swimming pool facility and the ocean. Now I can see why you can't afford to keep Maryborough's only public pool at its best.
I think its time for an ACA investigation into where our rates are actually being spent. Time for some good old fashioned public support, lets see how squeeky clean the council is under the microscope.
